vintagewinepoems.com Theme:  Temperance Movement

Poetry has always been a vehicle for commentary on social issues and for the motivation of political forces.  The social and political issues surrounding the consumption of alcoholic beverages serves as a prime example of this tradition.  The following poems all come from an era when vast political movements erupted in the U.S. and Europe to curb the unregulated saloon industry, the point of commerce for the vast majority of the “adult beverages” sold in those days -- circumstances that were indeed in need of reform.  The Temperance Movement reached its apex with the ill-fated prohibition of the manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages in the United States from 1917 to 1934.  For my views on the responsible use of wine and other adult beverages, see the introduction to the themes Defending Wine and Praising Wine.
