The Rhyme Maker
Sappho circa 7th Century bce.
Sappho
c. 7th Century bce

Theme:  Love and Romance

NOTES:
Alcaeus was a poet of Sappho's time, and perhaps her lover.  In this translation, she seems at bit upset with Alcaeus for his poetic focus on themes "manly".

Aphrodite is the goddess of love and beauty, while Ares  is the god of war.

To Alcaeus
Sappho (c. 630 bce-c.570 bce), Greek poet
translated by John Myers O'Hara (1870-1944), American poet

Countless are the cups thou drainest
In thy hymns to Dionysus,
O Alcaeus!

War and wine alone thou singest; –
Wherefore not of Aphrodite,
O Alcaeus!

Spacious halls are thine where many
Trophies hang in Ares' honor,
O Alcaeus!

Brazen shields and shining helmets,
Plates of brass, Chalcidian broad-swords,
O Alcaeus!

When with winter roars the Thracian
North wind through the leafless forest,
O Alcaeus!

Thou dost heap the fire and banish
Care with many a tawny goblet,
O Alcaeus!
