NOTES:
Amontillado is a variety of Sherry, a product of Spain, where the Guadalquiver River meanders through the vineyard-rich area known as Andalusia.

Stop Button Clutter!
Amontillado
Francis Saltus Saltus (1849-1889), American poet

When thy inspiring warmth pervades my frame,
I see the smiling Guadalquiver stray
Through Andalusia's fields of endless May,
Crowned by the ripe wheat like a golden flame.

The majos sport in many a wanton game
At the soft setting of the ardent day,
And in the Alameda's shadows gray,
Fond lovers murmur their delicious shame.

And then again, the vision will arise
Before me, of the worn Campeador
Draining thy fire beneath the Alhambra's stars.
While with fierce Moslem-valor in their eyes,
I see bejeweled Caliphs, red with gore.
Battle to death in moated Alcazars!

from Flasks and Flagons (1892)
