About Joseph Mills:

A faculty member at the Univeristy of North Carolina School of the Arts, Joseph Robert Mills has degrees in literature from the University of Chicago (B.A.), The Univeristy of New Mexico (M.A.), and the Univeristy of California-Davis (Ph.D).  His published works include poetry, fiction, drama, and criticism.  Additionally, with his wife Danielle Tarmey, he is co-author of A Guide to North Carolina's Wineries (John F. Blair, Publisher).

Mills has 5 volumes of poetry published with Press 53.
His scholarly works include the critical anthology Century of the Marx Brothers (2007).  Reading Louis L’Amour’s Hondo (2002) and Reading Richard Brautigan’s Trout Fishing in America (1998) have been included in Boise State University’s Western Writers Series.  His poetry has been featured on Garrison Keillor's The Writer's Almanac on National Public Radio.

Mills displays a wry sense of humor in his very accessible poetry, which often focuses on the charming everyday moments of life.  His collection of wine poems, Angels, Thieves, and Winemakers (2008) is a wonderful example of the wit, sensitivity, and powers of observation that are hallmarks of all his poetry.

Introductions Made Easy
Joseph Mills, American poet

If only people wore labels,
their foreheads clearly displaying
their appellation, their varietal,
their alcohol content,
think of the time it would save.
We could cut out the small talk,
the “where are you from?”
and “what do you do?”
Appropriate pairings
would be more obvious,
we might know if they met
government standards,
and we would have a better idea
who might improve with age
and who we should enjoy
right now.
