Lowell (1874-1925), American poet
will mix me a drink of stars, –
stars with polychrome needles,
stars jetting maroon and crimson,
quiet, green stars.
will tear them out of the sky,
squeeze them over an old silver cup,
I will pour the cold scorn of my Beloved into it,
that my drink shall be bubbled with ice.
will lap and scratch
I swallow it down;
I shall feel it as a serpent of fire,
and twisting in my belly.
snortings will rise to my head,
I shall be hot, and laugh,
that I have ever known a woman.
