is a parody of Omar Khayyam's famous wine poem A
Book of Verses underneath the Bough.
this poem, Gilbert Keith Chesterton is obviously not happy with the
modernization taking place in the triad "wine, women, and
refers to a technical form of analysis in poetics. If you can
a poem it has a recognizable meter (another technical term) that is
consistent throughout the piece. G. K. once said
about the new-fangled "free verse" of his day, "You may as
call sleeping in a ditch 'free architecture'".
This poem can be
"scanned" and is
found to be a fine example of iambic pentameter.
