The Rhyme Maker
G. K. Chesterton
G. K. Chesterton
1874-1936

Theme:  Other

Special Rhyme List:  Now That's Funny!

NOTES:
This is a parody of Omar Khayyam's famous wine poem A Book of Verses underneath the Bough.

In this poem, Gilbert Keith Chesterton is obviously not happy with the modernization taking place in the triad "wine, women, and song".

"Scanning" refers to a technical form of analysis in poetics.  If you can "scan" a poem it has a recognizable meter (another technical term) that is consistent throughout the piece.  G. K. once said  about  the new-fangled "free verse" of his day, "You may as well call sleeping in a ditch 'free architecture'".

This poem can be "scanned" and is found to be a fine example of iambic pentameter.

Stop Button Clutter!

The New Omar
G. K. Chesterton (1874-1936)

A Book of verses underneath the bough,
Provided that the verses do not scan,
A loaf of bread, a jug of wine and Thou,
Short-haired, all angles, looking like a man.

But let the wine be unfermented, Pale,
Of chemicals compounded, God knows how –
This were indeed the Prophet's Paradise,
O Paradise were Wilderness enow.
