Anthony Beal on the Web:
Tasting Stars
Anthony Beal, American poet

There were thousands of them;
Balloons silver, balloons gold,
Released like prayers into the aether.
I watched them race toward the moon,
Held rapt by the shimmer
Of their triumphant spirals.
To tasteful applause,
Their streaking fireworks burst
Across heavens frothing with the flight of doves uncaged,
Their jubilation of fresh-from-the-oven breads
And firm-fleshed tree fruits
Earnest as fountain wishes sent up by hopeful hearts.
My question answered for all time,
That of what sorcery lies in a name,
I met the devil,
And sipped the balloon-sweetened heavens.
