The Rhyme Maker
Anthony Beal, American poet
were thousands of them;
silver, balloons gold,
like prayers into the aether.
watched them race toward the moon,
rapt by the shimmer
their triumphant spirals.
streaking fireworks burst
heavens frothing with the flight of doves uncaged,
jubilation of fresh-from-the-oven breads
firm-fleshed tree fruits
as fountain wishes sent up by hopeful hearts.
question answered for all time,
of what sorcery lies in a name,
sipped the balloon-sweetened heavens.
