The Rhyme Maker
Apples of Sanlúcar*
Anthony Beal, American poet
evening, my longtime friend.
shake my hand
that secret way nearly as old as us.
with me and enjoy this salty air.
more let us relive past struggles and losses;
us catch and release brief glimpses of youth.
eat them with nuts and olives.
drink them with jamón
and fruits de mer,
lift our glasses of acquired wisdom
Pedro and surrounding shores
ancient horses wear their colors with pride.
go down dry, as uncounted years foretold.
rise with mouths full of chamomile,
rooted to the ground
the boots of our grandfathers,
dance fleeting cante
the new old men we have become;
filled with stars as the night above.
